Endometriosis (Chocolate Cyst)

Endometriosis (Chocolate Cyst)

Endometriosis is the implantation of tissue similar to the uterine lining outside the uterus (most often in the ovaries), bleeding with each menstrual cycle and forming cysts. These ovarian cysts are called "chocolate cysts" due to their appearance.

Symptoms

  • Progressively worsening period pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Difficulty conceiving (in 30-50% of patients)

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is made by examination, ultrasound and MRI when needed. Treatment is planned according to the patient's age, complaints and desire for pregnancy: follow-up with pain management and hormonal suppression, or laparoscopic removal of the cysts. Surgical timing is especially important for patients planning pregnancy.

If period pain affects your quality of life, it should definitely be evaluated; early diagnosis reduces both pain and infertility risk.
