What Are Genital Warts and Why Do They Appear?
Genital warts are benign growths created on the genital area skin by the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection, especially the “low-risk” types (frequently Type 6 and Type 11) that do not carry a cancer risk. Weeks, months, or sometimes years after the virus enters the body, it can find a moment when the immune system is weakened and appear in the form of warts on the skin surface.
How Are Genital Warts Identified? (Symptoms)
Warts are generally painless and do not cause bleeding, so they are sometimes only noticed during manual cleaning or by chance. The most common symptoms are:
Flesh-colored, pink, or brown small bumps at the entrance of the vagina, on the outer and inner lips, or around the anus.
They can be individual or form clusters that reach a “cauliflower” or “rooster comb” appearance by joining together.
Although they are generally painless, in some cases there may be mild itching, a stinging sensation, or discomfort due to friction during sexual intercourse.
What Are the Genital Wart Treatment Methods?
The main goal in the treatment of genital warts is to clear all visible lesions from the skin tissue, thereby stopping the spread and contagiousness of the virus. The treatments we apply in our clinic are specially planned according to the density and location of the warts:
Cauterization (Wart Burning): It is the method we use most frequently in genital wart treatment, giving the fastest and most definitive results. The area to be treated is completely numbed with local anesthesia (anesthetic cream or injection), and the patient feels no pain. With a special cautery device, the warts are burned and cleaned in seconds with the help of an electric current.
Cryotherapy (Wart Freezing): It is another painless method where warts are frozen using liquid nitrogen gas, causing them to fall off.
Radiofrequency (RF) and Laser Treatment: These are advanced technology methods preferred especially for vaporizing very widespread, stubborn warts, or those in aesthetically more sensitive areas without leaving scars.
Medical Treatment (Creams): For very small warts in the initial stage, special solutions and creams applied under doctor supervision may be preferred.
Post-Treatment Recovery and Risk of Recurrence
Wart burning or freezing procedures are practical applications that take an average of 15-20 minutes. After the procedure, our patients can immediately return to their daily lives. The small scabs formed in the treated area usually heal without leaving a scar within 1-2 weeks.
The treated warts do not reappear in the same place, but since the virus remains in the body, there is a possibility that new warts may appear in a different spot during periods when immunity is lowered. Therefore, regular gynecological follow-up after treatment, keeping the immune system strong, and getting the HPV vaccine are very important to minimize the risk of recurrence of the disease.
