Bartholin Cyst and Abscess Treatment: Fast and Permanent Solution to Pain
A sudden swelling and unbearable pain appearing in the genital area… A Bartholin cyst or abscess is a condition that makes it difficult for women to sit, walk, and even do their daily chores, requiring immediate intervention. You do not need to panic when you encounter these complaints; because its treatment is quite short, practical, and it is an ailment where relief occurs instantly after the procedure.
Op. Dr. Sadık Sözdinler offers fast solutions with modern surgical approaches that instantly stop the pain and minimize the risk of recurrence of the disease for his patients who apply with Bartholin cyst and abscess complaints in Izmir.
What is a Bartholin Cyst and Abscess? Why Does It Occur?
The glands located under the skin on both sides of the vaginal entrance that secrete fluid providing lubrication during sexual intercourse are called “Bartholin glands.” If the thin ducts of these glands become blocked for various reasons (tight clothing, friction, infections, or structural reasons), the fluid produced cannot be expelled and accumulates inside, creating a fluid-filled sac. This is called a Bartholin Cyst.
If bacteria infect the fluid inside this cyst and an infection develops, the condition turns into a much more painful, pus-filled Bartholin Abscess.
What are the Symptoms?
Symptoms vary depending on whether the blockage in the Bartholin gland is a cyst or an abscess:
In Case of Uninfected Cyst: A painless swelling, usually unilateral, about the size of a hazelnut or walnut, can be felt at the entrance of the vagina.
In Case of Abscess (Infection): * Redness, increased heat, and extreme sensitivity in the area of the swelling.
Unbearable stabbing pain when sitting, walking, or when underwear rubs against it.
Rapid growth and tenseness of the swelling.
Mild fever and fatigue in advanced cases.
Bartholin Cyst and Abscess Treatment Methods
The treatment planning is specially determined for you by Op. Dr. Sadık Sözdinler according to the size of the swelling and whether there is an infection (pus). Our goal is not only to stop the pain at that moment but also to prevent the cyst from recurring in the future.
Medication Treatment and Follow-up: In very small, painless, and uninfected cysts, warm sitz baths and, if necessary, antibiotic treatment can be applied to wait for the cyst to shrink spontaneously.
Abscess Drainage (Emptying the Pus): In pus-filled abscesses, a small incision is made under local anesthesia to drain the pus inside. The moment the procedure is finished, because the pressure inside the abscess disappears, our patients get off the table with great relief, and the pain disappears within seconds.
Marsupialization (Sac Opening Surgery): It is the most effective and permanent solution we apply in frequently recurring or very enlarged Bartholin cysts. After the inside of the cyst is emptied, the cyst wall is attached to the skin edges with special aesthetic stitches, creating a “new, permanent canal” through which the fluid can flow out. Thus, the possibility of the gland becoming blocked and forming a cyst is eliminated.
Post-Procedure Recovery Process
Bartholin cyst or abscess treatments are procedures completed in an average of 15-20 minutes under clinical conditions with local or mild anesthesia. Our patients can leave the clinic walking immediately after the procedure and return to their daily lives on the same day. During the healing process, paying attention to the hygiene rules recommended by our doctor and not swimming in the pool/sea for a short time is sufficient for complete recovery.
You do not have to endure this pain that even makes it difficult for you to sit. You can schedule your examination without wasting time for instant relief and permanent treatment.
